Right now college athletics is akin to the largely lawless wild west and has essentially none of the regulations/laws that professional sports do because the latter have anti-trust protection for the overall good of each pro sport. The NCAA (or any other body that emerges to "govern" college sports) also needs some protection in order to be able to regulate college sports for the overall good of each of those sports.

Bluewyn Gold wrote: Thu Jun 06, 2024 9:40 amIf the athletes and their lawyers get their way, the final artifice of amateurism will be stripped away, at least for certain schools. I honestly don't know if that's a good or bad thing at this point.
https://frontofficesports.com/how-the-n ... ettlement/

I'm coming around to the idea that certain schools - maybe only for certain sports (mainly football and basketball) - should separate from the NCAA and create an entirely professional level outside of the NCAA.

What's becoming clearer is that regulations and standards at the levels below the pro (i.e., the amateur/semi-professional) level can't remain boundless indefinitely or it will absolutely strangle fan interest at that level. The athletes, schools, and conferences are going to have to come to some basic agreements that set common-sense, fiscally responsible limits.

Until these really big concepts are defined and get settled, it's going to be chaos.

What a joke this section is from the link provided above by Bluewyn Gold (Thanks) _

“Any federal legislation to single out college athletes to be denied the same employee status, rights and hourly pay as fellow students in work study-style programs (e.g., student employees in dining halls, libraries—even selling popcorn at NCAA games) would be unconstitutional on Equal Protection grounds,” he says. That’s also the premise of the Johnson v. NCAA case, which argues that Division I athletes should be classified as employees under the Fair Labor Standards Act, and that they should be entitled to hourly minimum wage."

Comparing the minimum wages paid to non-athlete students working to pay for school & personal expenses (both of which have been paid for athletes for a long time) to anywhere from the thousands to millions of dollars being paid to college athletes to play sports is obscene. They aren't & won't be in the same universe. Arguing that similar laws/rules should apply to these totally disparate groups is a fraud perpetuated by lawyers and their clients.

Bill, the folks at the bottom of Bank of America who are earning $12-15/hour, whether full or part-time, are employees. The CEOs of such companies, who are earning tens of millions of dollars per year, are also employees. And don’t get me started on the hedge fund managers. Differences in pay have little to do with employment status…even college presidents know that. CUSA 2024 Football - Page 4 (2)

Make no mistake, the players’ (nor the fans’) preference(s) will not be first and foremost in the decisions made regarding the student athletes’ (can we still say that?) employment status or their maximum ability to earn money off their efforts.

Well, this thread has certainly deviated from simple CUSA football.

Face it…we will be playing a lower level of football than the Big Boys…but we will be above what’s we left behind. Let’s hope UD can compete with Liberty and whoever else is on our level…with enough success to get us a seat in the playoffs at whatever is left in the new championship order of FBS football.

Tubby: 3 national titles, one won on the field, all D2
Keeler: 3 national titles, all won on the field, one as a player, two as a coach, 1 D2, 2 FCS
Carty: 2 on-field national titles, one as a player, one as an OC, both FCS

Carty - get an FBS bowl win!

Cluck- you ended a post a while back with two words-the horror.1) I immediately thought of Marlon Brando character Col. Kurtz using those words twice as he is dying in Apocalypse Now directed by FF Coppola. 2)another famous quote was Robert Duvall's Lt. Col. Kilgore stated "I love the smell of napalm in the morning" after he called in a strike to allow Lance and himself to go surfing after taking over a village. Later, Lance hijacked Kilgore's surfboard and up the Mekong they hustled. If my memory serves me correctly, Kilgore sent out a search party to attempt to retrieve the board, but he was unsuccessful.
3) Dennis Hopper and Martin Sheen and others made this an iconic take on "the horror" of war. Quite a film!

"If quarterback stays healthy, Liberty will be a double digit favorite against all its conference opponents. They are 134 out of 134 in strength of schedule. CUSA is weakest conference by far. Only challenge for Liberty is on road at App. State. Even an undefeated Liberty team is likely NOT to make playoff vs. a one-loss Memphis or one-loss Boise State."

If you base everything on "pre-season numbers"--then you are unwise.

Liberty plays 5 games in 28 days, then one game in 23 days, then 6 games in 37 days.

The only days of the week it doesn't have a game are Sunday, Monday and Thursday.

Would note all handicappers have to go on is preseason numbers before the season begins.

Based on Joseph Conrad’s long short story: Heart of Darkness. The “horror” quote was in the story.

dchen-thanks for your knowledge. I never have seen/heard that quote attributed to the H. of D. I simply assumed it was FFC who placed those words onto Col. Kurtz's lips. It wonderful to view interesting bits of trivia/kmowledge being inserted in our athletic affairs site. CUSA 2024 Football - Page 4 (7)

as to Liberty Univ being a part of CUSA- that was best positive about our soon to be affiliation in FBS. They are a prime example of the ability to develop quality programs in Div.1 athletics.

Liberty is a prime example of having a boatload of money to develop quality programs in Div. 1 athletics ( saying this in a positive manner).

IMHO Liberty is not significantly better than other CUSA teams. Rich Rod is doing a great job at JAX and WKU is always dangerous. Sammy lost to LU on the last play of the game last year, a goal line stand by LU. That being said, LU is building an elite team. Appy St’s starting QB last year in week one transferred to LU after he got injured in that game and they also signed a 4 star QB who started on IMG’s national team. We’re still pretty confident if our starting QB goes down but conference play is very difficult to get through.

Like at UD, there are numerous building projects related to football going on at WKU, Sammy, Mid TN, NM State and Jax. Liberty upgraded their football field house as well. Last year, JAX, WKU and LU all recorded wins against bowl eligible Sun Belt teams and NM State beat Auburn. The better the conference does, the better we all do.

Can’t wait for Delaware to start conference play. It’s gonna be fun!

Happy to have you on this board...you provide a good perspective. Thank you.

Sammy had a poor record last year, but they were in almost every game and lost some heartbreakers. Baseball isn't the only game of inches. And, as you mentioned, CUSA teams have been pulling upsets against the Big Boy conference teams recently. Can't wait to start playing a CUSA schedule to see how we match up.

Bonus: there will be some interesting road trips (and media attention) over the upcoming years, both to the CUSA teams and the P4 teams we have put on the schedule. Carty and Chrissi have been a blessing...rising out of a decade of being in the football graveyard feels good. CUSA 2024 Football - Page 4 (11)
