baruna falls ![]() All American ![]() Posts: 3,134 | Post: #1 Doug Smock does a great job covering Marshall sports. In his new article he states that Conf USA teams will make $250,000 a year in the new tv deal. I wonder if it is even that much. Where is the money coming from in this new tv contract? No money from ESPN, 1 million or so from CBS and no money from BEIN network( at least I think no money). Plus the league will have to pay for their ESPN 3 content. Is it possible that they league actually as a tv contract in which they are in negative financial territory? Smock article: Not buying that this new TV contract is about being the first G5 tv contract negotiated since ESPN began to loose money. I think it is more about market valuation more than anything else. Its actually stunning imo. If I was Marshall I would look at returning to the MAC. If I was in CUSA I would be angry at the CUSA brass for spinning this contract into something that it is not. Also, at what point does the drop in money mean layoffs within sports departments. I think what we are seeing is a market driven separation in college athletics. To me its extraordinary that a conference drops in value this much. Question: Would adding App State, Ga Southern, ULL and Ark State increase the value of CUSA? I think it would. (This post was last modified: 05-27-2016 09:34 AM by baruna falls.)

Decent but still just good teams outside the bubble. 1-2 bid league with 14-16 mouths to feed. How many members now? I thought they would get around $300k each which was my original guess. Crazy with that number they have to cover production costs. Meanwhile the big 10 gets $250 million per season for 1/2 of content.

I found the article already in the archives http://www.wvgazettemail.com/sports/2016...sa-tv-deal Long term it doesn't look good for the league to survive...plays into my theory that about 72-80 teams will evolve into a new P4/5/6 (take your pick). The rest will merge into a super FCS. Marshall IMHO has a puncher's chance to make the cut but no likely. I think the bulk of the schools will come from the AAC and MWC...maybe 1 or 2 spots for a NIU, Marshall, etc... Let's say 80 FB programs, remember the NCAA Hoops tourney is a huge money maker...I see at least another 100-150 schools staying eligible for the Hoops tourney and other NCAA D-1 championships.

HP-TBDPITL ![]() All American ![]() Posts: 3,496 | Post: #13 The move to 14 just didn't work. CUSA is basically a bloated Sun Belt. They have more inventory, but its Sun Belt level inventory. And then UAB football comes back from the dead. Death blow right there for the league. Best thing CUSA could do is merge with the Sun Belt and then split and create like three 8 team leagues. Minimize costs, minimize travel. For example... East Charlotte That right there looks like a conference. Rivalries in there...games you can travel to. Try and get any type of regional TV deal you can.

Any advantage CUSA schools have in TV earnings is more than eaten up by the cost of flying teams from eastern locations like FIU or Marshall all the way to UTEP. I know some don't like it, but the reality is TV see's the two leagues as essentially equal. Why not create two tight regional leagues (one eastern and one western) that likely have about the same TV value but much lower travel costs? Might sell more tickets to traveling fans as well.
