President's Message

WHY DO WE COACH?

Recently, I was reminded to consider why I do what I do. We were rejected for the NCAA Division II playoffs this year despite being co-champions of the South Atlantic Conference with a 10-1 record. We beat a Division I-Football Championship Subdivision team decisively, and led the nation in several statistical categories, including scoring offense. We were ranked high in the AFCA Division II Coaches' Top 25 poll, and we were a team that probably could have made a realistic run at the Division II national championship. Our team and coaches were devastated!

It was a tough assignment to go into a meeting with 175 players, who thought that the world was not fair and who were wondering if their investment this season was wasted, and let them know that they didn't make the playoffs, and that we had a good season. What a great teachable moment it turned out to be.

In this great laboratory of learning, our philosophical theories, feelings, emotions, and our perceived rights and entitlements are tested. This is a great place for us to live out what we say we believe. The process of using our position as "coach" to teach how to maximize our lives today, tomorrow, and throughout eternity, is one the profession of coaching is afforded.

My prayer now, as 2007 President of the AFCA, is that we as coaches can be so on target in our reasons and motives for coaching that the Lord would empower us to make effective cultural, as well as societal, differences in our world. We must accept our position as leader, and relish the opportunity to be a good example or motivator. We need to be able to see beyond the highly acclaimed and culturally desired enticements of money, fame, position, and image to be the greatest servants of mankind that our position and profession allows us.

Our convention this year will be meaningful for those of us who are still evaluating why we do what we do. We need to take a fresh look at some new ideas. We have the privilege to take advantage of interesting seminars with speakers both young and old, with experience from the NFL to High School. We have unlimited opportunities as we explore all of the exhibitors at the convention, or have hallway fellowship with other coaches, and attend our meetings.

Our wives have the opportunity to join with us and get involved with other wives. Some of us who have never brought our wives to the convention might need to consider bringing them this year.

Let us consider how we use our time, which is an irretrievable gift to us.

Sometimes the idea that we can out work each other at the expense of our families, friends, and more importantly, our God, is a deception to which we coaches often fall prey. In considering how and why we do what we do, let us have hearts of right believing, heads of right thinking, and hands of right doing. That was our team's theme this year. In Psalm 139:23-34, it reads, "Search me, God, and know my heart (heart); test me and know my thoughts (head). See if there is any offensive way in me (hands); lead me in the everlasting way."

Executive Director Grant Teaff and our hard working, enthused staff at the AFCA have accepted the challenge to lead us to make a difference through many opportunities and challenges our great profession is facing. This year's AFCA convention is a perfect example and opportunity for us to get a shutout and score some points!

2007 AFCA TRAILBLAZER AWARD WINNER

William "Billy" Nicks, Former Prairie View A & M U. Head Coach

William J. "Billy" Nicks, the late Prairie View A & M University coaching legend, has been named the recipient of the AFCA's 2007 Trailblazer Award. The award will be presented posthumously to Nicks at the AFCA Kickoff Luncheon on January 7 at the 2008 AFCA Convention in Anaheim, CA.

The AFCA Trailblazer Award was created to honor early leaders in the football coaching profession who coached at historically black colleges and universities. Past Trailblazer Award winners include Charles Williams of Hampton, Cleve Abbott of Tuskegee, and Arnett "Ace" Mumford of Southern U. The award is given each year to a person that coached in a particular decade ranging from 1920-1970. This year's winner coached from 1950-1959.

"Coach Nicks was a great football coach," said current Prairie View A & M U. head coach Henry Frazier III. "I've met so many alumni that played for him and they have nothing but admiration for him. If I can be half the coach that Coach Nicks was, then I would have done a great job. It's truly an honor to be able to coach at a place that such a great legend coached at. He is definitely deserving of such a prestigious award."

Nicks was the head coach at Morris Brown College from 1930-35, 1937-39, and 1941-42, where he won more than 60 games, two Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) titles and a Black College National Championship in 1941. He went on to become the head coach at Prairie View A & M from 1945-47, assistant coach at the school in 1948-51, and head coach again from 1952-65.

During his time at Prairie View, Nicks won more than 120 games while winning the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) title eight times and taking his teams to five Black College National Championships. Nicks had a winning record against every SWAC school, including Grambling State and its late, legendary head coach, Eddie Robinson.

Coach Nicks also won conference titles as the basketball and baseball coach, and served as the director of athletics. Nicks also served as Director of USO Clubs at Fort Stewart in Georgia and Tuskegee Army-Air Field in Alabama. He was also the special assistant to the university president at Prairie View and ended his professional career as the parks director with the City of Houston Parks and Recreation Department.

In addition to the 2007 AFCA Trailblazer Award, Nicks has been honored in a number of different ways. He was inducted into the NAIA, Helms, Prairie View A & M, Morris Brown, the Atlanta University Center and SWAC Halls of Fame. In 1999, Nicks was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Also, the athletic and intramural complex, as well as the athletic field house at Prairie View A & M is named in his honor.

2007 POWER OF INFLUENCE AWARD

Sweet Home high School's Rob Younger

Rob Younger, head football coach at Sweet Home (OR) High School, has been named the recipient of the 2007 Power of Influence Award. Younger was nominated for the award by the Oregon Athletic Coaches Association.

The award, which is presented jointly by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and the American Football Coaches Foundation® (AFCF), will be presented to Younger at the AFCA Coach of the Year Dinner on January 9 at the 2008 AFCA Convention in Anaheim, CA.

The Power of Influence Award was created as a way for the AFCA and AFCF® to honor a deserving high school football coach for his effect on his players, school and community. This award is not based on wins and losses, however, it is noted that coaches of powerful influence have longevity and success. It is the first AFCA award specifically designed to honor a high school coach.

"The idea that I was selected by the state of Oregon is beyond belief, and then to win the national award is unthinkable to me," Younger said. "It just shows how blessed I am to live in a great community like Sweet Home and be constantly surrounded by great players and great assistant coaches--my best assistant coach being my wife, Karen."

Younger, who has coached football for 32 years, started his career as an assistant coach in 1975 at Crescent Valley H.S. in Corvallis, OR. In 1980, Younger became the defensive coordinator at Sweet Home High, holding that position until he was named head coach in 1988. During his 28 years at Sweet Home, Younger has also coached softball, basketball, and baseball.

Younger has a 115-76 overall record in his 20 years at Sweet Home, where he has guided the Huskies to six Capital Conference championships and helped the team earn 16 trips to the state playoffs. Including his eight years as defensive coordinator, Sweet Home has won a total of nine league titles and made the playoffs 22 times.

He is currently a member of the Oregon Athletic Coaches Association, Oregon Schools Activities Association, and the National Federation of High School Coaches Association. Aside from his dedication to football, Coach Younger finds time to volunteer with the Sweet Home Fire & Ambulance District and serves on the board at Sweet Home Community Chapel.

Younger has been honored by the Oregon Athletic Coaches Association with the Contributor Award in 2005. He has also been named Capital Conference Coach of the Year eight times. In the Sweet Home community, Younger was recognized as the Sweet Home Fire & Ambulance Department's Rescue Member of the Year in 1991 and Engineer of the Year in 1987.

In a letter of recommendation, Barbara Weld, Athletic Secretary for Sweet Home H.S., stated the following about Coach Younger's power of influence: "No matter where you go in Sweet Home, people know Rob Younger. Rob is very active in his church and respected in our community for his stand of high morals and good character. He is an excellent role model to students and adults alike, as he is willing to live what he expects from others."

The other finalists for this year's award were: George Smith, St. Thomas Aquinas H.S. (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.); William Sharpe, Jimtown H.S. (Elkhart, Ind.); Mike Mahlen, Verndale H.S. (Verndale, Minn.); Tom Brown, Maiden H.S. (Maiden, N.C.); Jerry Miller, Montrose H.S. (Montrose, S.D.); Hugh Sandifer, Wylie H.S. (Abilene, Texas); Phil Ottney, Glenwood City Schools (Glenwood City, Wis.); Joel Eskelson, Big Piney H.S. (Big Piney, Wyo.).

2008 Amos Alonzo Stagg Award

Bill Walsh

The late, legendary Bill Walsh has been selected as the 2008 recipient of the AFCA's Amos Alonzo Stagg Award.

The award, which honors those "whose services have been outstanding in the advancement of the best interests of football," will be presented, posthumously, to the Walsh family at the AFCA Awards Luncheon on January 9 during the 2008 AFCA Convention in Anaheim, California.

Walsh was presented the Stagg Award shortly before his death on July 30, 2007, by AFCA First Vice-President, Tyrone Willingham of the U. of Washington, who passed along a note from Walsh to the AFCA membership.

Walsh stated, "I am overwhelmed upon hearing that I am to receive the Amos Alonzo Stagg Award. It is both an honor and a privilege to acknowledge this, but very importantly, it is an opportunity to be involved in the fellowship of your great organization. The fraternity of American football coaches is the finest association I have ever experienced."

"When the Stagg Award committee nominated Bill Wash to be the 2008 recipient, I had the privilege of informing him that he would receive this award," AFCA Executive Director Grant Teaff said. "The AFCA and our membership are saddened by the loss of Bill Walsh, but we are so happy that through this award, he knew his great contributions to our sport were recognized by his Association."

Widely considered one of the most brilliant and innovative football minds to ever coach, Walsh spent 15 years as a head coach in the college and professional ranks: five years during two different stints at Stanford and 10 years with the San Francisco 49ers.

Walsh was named head coach of the 49ers in 1979 and led the franchise to Super Bowl titles in 1981, 1984 and 1988. He earned an overall record of 102-63-1 with the 49ers, and guided the team to three NFC Championship wins and six NFC Western Division titles. In seven of his last eight years as head coach, Walsh's San Francisco teams won 10 or more games and advanced to the NFC playoffs. During his 10 years as the head coach, he and his coaching staff perfected the style of play known popularly as the West Coast offense.

Walsh earned many awards during his tenure in San Francisco. He was named AP, UPI, Sporting News and Pro Football Weekly NFL Coach of the Year in 1981 after the 49ers' first Super Bowl triumph. He was also named UPI NFL Coach of the Year in 1984 after leading San Francisco to its second Super Bowl title. In 1993, Walsh earned the NFL's highest honor when he was inducted into the Professional Football Hall of Fame.

Walsh began his coaching career at Washington High School in Fremont, CA. He then served as an assistant in college, first under Marv Levy at California-Berkeley, then with John Ralston at Stanford.

Walsh began his pro coaching career in 1966 as an assistant with the Oakland Raiders. As a Raider assistant, Walsh was groomed in the vertical passing offense of Sid Gillman. Walsh would later modify his own offensive philosophy to favor a predominantly horizontal passing approach, which he called the West Coast Offense. Walsh moved to the expansion Cincinnati Bengals in 1968, serving under Paul Brown for seven seasons as one of the architects of the team's offense. He left the Bengals after the 1975 season and served as an assistant coach for Tommy Prothro with the San Diego Chargers in 1976. Walsh then moved for the first of two tenures as head football coach at Stanford, from 1977 to 1978. He earned a 17-7 overall record in his two years on "The Farm," with victories in the Sun Bowl and Bluebonnet Bowl, respectively.

Walsh returned to Stanford in 1992 as head coach after spending the three previous years as a broadcaster of NFL games for NBC. His 1992 squad finished the season with a 10-3 record and beat Penn State in the Blockbuster Bowl. Walsh stepped down as head coach in 1994. He returned to the San Francisco front office in 1999 and worked as the vice president and general manager for three years. Walsh stayed on as a special consultant with the team until 2004, when he was appointed as special assistant to the athletic director at Stanford. He spent the 2005 academic as the interim athletic director until a replacement was found.

Walsh is survived by his wife, Geri, and two children, Craig and Elizabeth; his sister, Maureen, and two grandchildren.

THE AWARD

The Amos Alonzo Stagg Award is given to the "individual, group or institution whose services have been outstanding in the advancement of the best interests of football." Its purpose is "to perpetuate the example and influence of Amos Alonzo Stagg."

The award is named in honor of a man who was instrumental in founding the AFCA in the 1920s. He is considered one of the great innovators and motivating forces in the early development of the game of football. The plaque given to each recipient is a replica of the one given to Stagg at the 1939 AFCA Convention in tribute to his 50 years of service to football.

AMOS ALONZO STAGG

Amos Alonzo Stagg began his coaching career at the School of Christian Workers, now Springfield (MA) College, after graduating from Yale University in 1888.

Stagg also served as head coach at Chicago (1892-1932) and College of the Pacific (1933-1946). His 41 seasons at Chicago is one of the longest head coaching tenures in the history of the college game.

Among the innovations credited to Stagg are the tackling dummy, the huddle, the reverse play, man in motion, knit pants, numbering plays and players, and the awarding of letters.

A long-time AFCA member, Stagg was the Association's 1943 Coach of the Year.

According to NCAA records, Stagg's 57-year record as a college head coach is 314-199-35. He was 84 years old when he ended his coaching career at Pacific in 1946. He died in 1965 at the age of 103.

2008 Tuss McLaughry Award

Tom Osborne

Former Nebraska head coach and Congressman Tom Osborne is the 2008 recipient of the AFCA's highest honor, the Tuss McLaughry Award, which will presented to him January 9 at the at the AFCA's Coach of the Year Dinner in Anaheim, CA.

Established in 1964, the Tuss McLaughry Award is given to a distinguished American (or Americans) for the highest distinction in service to others. It is named in honor of DeOrmond "Tuss" McLaughry, the first lull-time secretary-treasurer of the AFCA and one of the most dedicated and influential members in the history of the Association.

The 35th winner of the award, Osborne joins a select group of past McLaughry Award recipients that includes six former U.S. presidents, seven generals, five astronauts, and well-known celebrities such as comedian Bob Hope and actors Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne, and Burt Reynolds.

Osborne served as U. of Nebraska head coach from 1973 to 1997. In 2000, he announced he would run for Nebraska's 3rd District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Osborne won with more than 80 percent of the vote in 2001 and would win two more elections, staying in office until 2007. He returned to the U. of Nebraska on Oct. 17, 2007 as interim athletic director.

In 25 seasons as Nebraska's head coach, Osborne compiled a record of 255-49-3 (.836) and retired with the fifth-best winning percentage all-time in Football Bowl Subdivison. The 255 wins rank 15th overall among coaches in NCAA history. In his last five years, Osborne guided the Huskers to back-to-back tiles in 1994 and 1995, and then capped his career by sharing the 1997 title with Michigan. Nebraska's back-to-back national titles in 199495 made Osborne the first, coach to accomplish that feat since Bear Bryant led Alabama to titles in 1978-79.

Under Osborne, Nebraska became just the second school all-time and the first since Oklahoma in 1955-56 to post back-to-back perfect national championship seasons. Osborne's last five Nebraska teams produced the best five-year run in college football history, amassing an amazing 60-3 record, including five consecutive 11-win seasons.

His on-field excellence earned him numerous honors from the AFCA during his coaching career. He was a seven-time AFCA District/Regional Coach of the Year selection (1974-78-79-82-83-877-94) and was named the Association's Division I-A National Coach of the Year after his first national championship in 1994. Osborne also served two terms on the AFCA's Board of Trustees, from 1978 to 1983 and 1986 o 1988.

Oshorne-coached Nebraska teams captured 13 Big 8/Big 12 crowns. including six of his last seven seasons on the sidelines. All 25 of his Husker teams won at least nine games and played in a bowl game, while 15 won 10 or more games. Those achievements earned Osborne an immediate ticket to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1999, waiving the customary three-year wait for induction into the hall. His legendary career also prompted the Nebraska's Board of Regents to name the Memorial Stadium playing field in Osborne's honor.

Of Nebraska's 13 league titles under Osborne, nine were out right. The Huskers captured league titles in 1975, 1978, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1988, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, and 1997. As either a head coach or assistant, Osborne was involved in 21 of Nebraska's 43 conference titles, all five of its national championships and 34 of its 44 bowl appearances.

Thirty-four of the 36 Husker teams he was associated with ended their season in a bowl game. The 25 bowl appearances lie made as a head coach rank Osborne fourth all-time behind Penn State's Joe Paterno (33), Alabama's Bear Bryant (29). and Florida State's Bobby Bowden (28).

Osborne-coached players earned 55 first-team All-America certificates (47 players), won two Heismans, six Outland Trophies, one Butkus Award, and one Johnny Unitas Award.

Osborne, a Hastings, NE resident, earned his B.A. in history from Hastings College, where he was the state's athlete-of-the-year in 1959. He earned his M.A. in educational psychology from Nebraska in 1963; and his Ph.D. in educational psychology from Nebraska in 1965. After receiving his undergraduate degree from Hastings, Osborne played for three seasons in the National Football League--two with the Washington Redskins and one with the San Francisco 49ers--as a wide receiver.

He began his coaching career in 1962 as a graduate assistant on Bob Devaney's first Nebraska staff. He became a part-time coach in 1964 and in 1967was elevated to full-time receivers coach. He later served as offensive coordinator and in 1972 was named assistant head coach by Devaney before taking over as head coach in 1973. Osborne and his wife, Nancy, reside in Lincoln.

2007 CEO Coach of the Year

David Brandon Chairman and CEO, Domino's Pizza

David A. Brandon, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Domino's Pizza, is the 2007 recipient of the American Football Coaches Foundation CEO Coach of the Year Award.

In its second year, this is the highest honor bestowed by the organization, whose inaugural recipient in 2006 was Jeffrey R. Immelt, the CEO of General Electric. Brandon was selected for the award by a unanimous vote of the AFCF Board of Directors. He was honored December 18, 2007, at the Foundation's CEO Coach of the Year Dinner, held at The Waldorf-Astoria in New York, N.Y

"David Brandon represents the style and substance of leader ship that our profession strives to demonstrate to those we teach and lead," AFCA Executive Director Grant Teaff said. "It was obvious to the American Football Coaches Foundation's CEO Coach of the Year Selection Committee and to the Board of Directors that Mr. Brandon exemplifies the kind of leadership that builds winning teams. Brandon learned valuable lessons of leadership while playing college football and observing great coaches. The American Football Coaches Association and the American Football Coaches Foundation are very proud to honor David Brandon, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Domino's Pizza, as the recipient of the 2007 CEO Coach of the Year Award."

Born in Dearborn, MI, in May 1952, Brandon has served as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Domino's since March 1999. He serves on the Boards of Directors of The TJX Companies, Inc., Burger King Corporation, Kaydon Corporaton and Northwest Airlines. Prior to Domino's, Brandon was President and Chief Executive Officer of Valassis, Inc., a leading sales pro motion company, where he worked in increasing levels of responsibility, for over 20 years.

Brandon began his career at Procter & Gamble following his graduation from the U. of Michigan, where he was the member of three Big Ten Championship teams coached by the late, legendary Bo Schembechler Brandon served an eight-year term on the Board of Regents for the U. of Michigan and is now Regent Emeritus.

"I have developed and evolved my leadership philosophy over the years by tapping into life experiences that teach important lessons," said Brandon. "I've tried to emulate leaders who I admire, many of whom have been closest to me ... like my family and my coaches. Integrity and fair play, preparation, and working harder than the competition were things I learned playing football that apply to every situation I've encountered in business and in life.

"My very best life coach has always been my dad, who believes that people need to have a strong work ethic and a 'purpose' to succeed in life and be happy. Another very influential figure in my life was my college football coach, Bo Schembechler. Bo passed away last year, and I miss him greatly. But, I always remember what he taught me: 'You can never stay the same. You either get better ... or you get worse.' This important lesson drives me to try to get better each and every day.

"I greatly appreciate being honored by the AFCF and believe strongly in the mission of their organization," added Brandon. "I am living proof of how great football coaches can mold young men into successful leaders. I dedicate this award to all of the great coaches I had over the course of my life, including my Dad; my high school coaches, Bob Keezer, Garvin Smith and Jim Rockel; and Coach Bo Schembechler."

In 2006, Brandon was honored as the Michigan Executive of the Year by the Wayne State U. School of Business, and the Ernst & Young Master Entrepreneur of the Year. He is also heavily involved in many community and charitable organizations. Brandon is a former chairman of the Executive Advisory Board of the Michigan Urology Center; a Director of the Purple Rose Theatre, Vice Chairman of the Detroit Renaissance Board; member of the National Advisory Board of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and a Trustee of the Gerald R. Ford Foundation.

Brandon and his wife, Jan, reside in Ann Arbor, MI. The Brandon's have three sons, Scott, Nick, and Chris, and a daughter, Carli.

The funds raised from the CEO Coach of the Year dinner will support the AFCF's education initiatives through the AFCA's publications, website and national convention. More than 6,000 football coaches from all levels attend the national convention, and over 10,000 football coaches globally benefit through personal, technical and leadership development. Because of The Foundation, football coaches on all levels nationwide pay minimal membership dues and are never charged a convention fee.

The AFCF, a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization was established by the AFCA in 1998 to fund its education mission. Its specific responsibility is to seek contributions from a broad range of donors--friends, businesses, corporations, foundations and trusts, to support and implement existing AFCA educational programs; and, to develop exciting and dynamic new initiatives that will serve the coaches, the student-athletes, and the schools they represent. Contributions generated by The Foundation will ensure that the coaching community will continue to have the finest possible professional development and educational tools now and in the future.
